Sydney Sweeney has spoken out against what she sees as the "fake" nature of female empowerment in Hollywood, expressing her frustration with how women in the industry often tear each other down rather than uplift one another.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Euphoria actress shared her disappointment over the lack of genuine support among women in Hollywood. "It’s disheartening to see women tear each other down," Sweeney revealed. "Especially when women who are successful in other areas of the industry see younger talent working hard toward their dreams and then try to discredit them."
Sweeney went on to criticize the industry’s emphasis on female solidarity, noting, “This entire industry, all people say is ‘Women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening. It’s all fake.” According to the actress, despite the constant talk of empowerment, she finds the reality in Hollywood much different.
The young star reflected on why criticism is frequently directed at her, saying, “Our entire lives, we’ve been conditioned to believe only one woman can be at the top. It’s a generational problem, where women feel they must compete instead of lifting each other up.”
Sweeney added, “I’m still trying to figure it out. I’m just doing my best. Why am I getting attacked?”
Her comments come after Hollywood producer Carol Baum publicly criticized Sweeney, questioning her acting abilities and popularity. Sweeney issued a firm response, stating, “It’s sad that a woman with the chance to share her expertise chooses to attack another woman. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character.”
Through her candid reflections, Sweeney highlights the unique challenges young women continue to face in Hollywood, even during a time when the message of female empowerment is supposedly celebrated. Her insights reveal a gap between the industry's ideals and the reality faced by many women trying to build their careers.
