Hollywood legend Kathy Bates recently shared an honest reflection on her journey through cancer and the surgeries she underwent in her fight against the disease. The Misery and American Horror Story star, now 76, has faced both breast and ovarian cancer, coming through each with resilience and a unique perspective on body image and health.
Kathy, who underwent a double mastectomy in 2012 following her breast cancer diagnosis, has spoken candidly about choosing not to have reconstructive surgery afterward. In an appearance on the MeSsy podcast with hosts Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Kathy explained that she felt at peace with her body as it was, saying, “I just didn’t want to go through [reconstruction]… At my age, I wasn’t in a relationship, and I didn’t think it would impact my career. So I thought, why do I have to?”
The award-winning actress shared that the decision brought her a sense of relief. She mentioned that her breasts were once “really heavy” and that their absence has given her a new sense of freedom and comfort. “They were like 10 pounds,” she laughed, adding, “It’s strange, but I actually kind of enjoy not having breasts.”
Kathy opened up about her experience with the costume department on her show at the time, who offered creative solutions to help her adjust to her changing body. They designed a Spanx-like garment with built-in cups for scenes requiring a more traditional silhouette, which she appreciated. However, she admitted that the prosthetics were often uncomfortable. “They’re hot, they’re heavy, and they made me unhappy,” she shared, adding that she often preferred to go without them, embracing her natural look.
Kathy’s battle with cancer brought additional challenges. Following her double mastectomy, she developed lymphedema, a painful condition causing swelling in her arms. Despite the physical difficulties, she has continued to work and has inspired many with her positive outlook and honesty about her experiences.
Podcast host Christina Applegate, who also underwent a double mastectomy after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2008, related to Kathy’s experience. Christina revealed that she no longer has nipples but feels no need to replace them, sharing a similar sentiment: “I don’t need them. I’m totally fine.” The two actresses’ openness offered a refreshing take on accepting life after cancer and finding confidence in self-acceptance.
Kathy, who first battled ovarian cancer in 2003, had previously kept her diagnosis private. “I didn’t tell anybody,” she shared in an interview with People, revealing that she continued working immediately after her surgery. Despite her struggles, she chose to keep her focus on her career and health, finding strength in her work and determination.
Kathy’s story reflects the strength and courage of countless women who have faced similar battles. Her openness and grace in discussing her journey offer a reminder that beauty and confidence come from within.
