The Gavin and Stacey star reflects on motherhood, health challenges, and her hopes for the future.
Joanna Page, beloved for her role in Gavin and Stacey, has opened up about her enduring maternal instincts and the possibility of expanding her family. Already a devoted mother to four children – Eva, Kit, Noah, and Boe – Joanna revealed in a recent interview with Woman and Home magazine that she’s been considering fostering or adoption.
"I’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting," Joanna shared. "It’s something I’ve chatted about with James because I’m still very maternal, and it’s a possibility I would think about in the future."
Earlier this year, Joanna experienced a pivotal health moment that gave her pause. A routine health check revealed that one of her ovaries was no longer functioning, marking a significant shift in her reproductive health.
"There wasn’t anything left – no eggs," Joanna explained. "That moment felt huge, as if my body was saying, ‘That is it.’”
Despite this, Joanna doesn’t regret her earlier decision to prevent future pregnancies. However, she admitted to fleeting moments of longing earlier this year, even researching whether reversing the procedure was possible.
"I went on the internet and looked up: ‘Can you have your tubes put back together?’ You can. One in 200 women might get pregnant after doing that," she confessed. "When I told James, he just looked at me and said, ‘What on earth are you going on about?’”
Joanna has always been open about the challenges and joys of balancing a large family. She’s even scaled back her acting career to focus on presenting roles, giving her more time to be with her children and husband, James Thornton.
Reflecting on their journey, Joanna recalled the strain the Covid lockdowns placed on their marriage. Caring for four young children while navigating school closures led to tensions in their relationship, with the couple humorously admitting they threatened divorce multiple times.
"We argued constantly and even went a month without speaking," she said. "It was a tough period, but we came out of it stronger."
While Joanna has decided not to pursue additional pregnancies, her maternal spirit remains undiminished. Whether through fostering or adoption, she’s keeping her options open as she considers what the future might hold for her family.
Her story is a heartfelt reminder of the evolving journey of motherhood and the love and resilience it takes to navigate life’s unexpected twists and turns.
